Nancy Sue Griffet's Obituary
Nancy Sue Griffet (Reed), age 85, passed away on 04/14/2025 in Decatur, Illinois.
Born on April 2nd, 1940, Nancy was born to Opal and Cecil Reed with sisters Charlotte and Cecila who preceded her in death. She married John Albert Griffet on January 1st, 1983. John preceded Nancy in death on February 22nd, 2018, after many years together. Surviving are their children Cheryl Whitaker, Ed Carnahan, and Jessica West (Jason West), their grandchildren Selina Wikoff, Tesla Carnahan, Jordan Sleeth (Layssa), Cody Sleeth (Erika), Damien Griffet, Setin West, and Jean West, great grandchildren Hazel and Crue.
Nancy was also preceded in death by her grandchildren Joshua and Sabrena Carnahan, Jason Sleeth and Marie Carnahan, as well as her daughter Ronda, step-sons Rick and David Griffet, and nephews Joe, Darr, Cecil, and Tony Tippit.
Nancy worked at Decatur Container for 7 years as well as Seasonal from ’79 until its closure. Balancing work, a husband, and her own children, she also raised half her neighborhood when her children were growing up. She also enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals and watching NASCAR with her husband, though her favorite was number 24 – Jeff Gordan. If you’d ever gone down Cantrell during NASCAR season, you were sure to spot John and Nancy outside watching by their tree, a beer in his hand, a Pepsi in hers, and grandchildren running around their yard, and maybe you even honked and waved at them.
Nancy was also an avid country music fan, particularly Alan Jackson. She told her grandkids that Alan Jackson ‘should’ve been their grandpa’. Though gone, we’ll surely remember when…
“Remember when
We said when we turned gray
When the children grow up and move away
We don’t be sad, we’ll be glad
For all the life we’ve had
And we’ll remember when”
