Nancy and I were friends at Battle Ground High School. I am so grateful that we got back in touch with each other in recent years so I could hear about her family and life through Christmas letters. I was so sad to hear of her cancer. We were in drama together and decided to audition for the roles of the dwarves Kili and Fili in The Hobbit. We got the job as the twins. We were about the same height and hair color, and with matching clothes (red and blue tights!) and beards (!) we looked enough alike. We had one memorable rehearsal where we were stuffed into a barrel (which had a waxy interior with some fuzzy remnants stuck to it) and were in there while one of the other characters practiced some funny bit. We were hot, cramped and low on air and finally had to remind them to let us get out of the barrel and practice that some other time. We were always itchy after being in the barrel — turns out the fuzzy stuff was fiberglass insulation. We were both academics, and not in the popular crowd or much into the social scene. I remember talking with her about going to the cheerleading auditions in our dwarf costumes. We weren't brave enough to do that, but it was fun thinking about it. She was a wonderful person. I am so glad that she had a happy life and that she created some good human beings. Her early death is unfair, unjust and just plain maddening. While I don't believe "everything has a purpose", I hope her children will celebrate her by being the best humans they can be. I am ashamed that I didn't write or call after hearing the news. I'm a coward about death. I will offer this: if Jeffrey or her children come to California, I'll host you either in Sebastopol (Sonoma wine country) or Tahoma (Lake Tahoe). Nancy was always kind and gracious. What a great lady. I will miss her terribly. I have gratitude in so many ways for knowing her but I will share her work on the speech team and Southwestern High School. Her tireless work, along with her husband, Jeff, did so much for the students who were involved. Both Jenny and Daniel benefitted tremendously from her work. Thanks so much.John Krantz

I am so sad to hear of the passing of my friend and colleague. Nancy and I worked together at Southwestern Elementary in Hanover, IN. Nancy always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. Nancy spoke often of the love she had for her family, and she was passionate about her job. May all the powers that be comfort your family.Sherry Bear

I just heard about Nancy. I'm so sorry for your loss. In August 2012 I started work as a speech therapist with the Decatur Public Schools and Nancy made me feel so welcome via e-mails before we even met. She was friendly and kind when we finally did meet and thereafter. I will miss her. With Deepest Sympathy,Jane Innis
