Peggy Arlene McLaughlin's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Peggy Arlene McLaughlin, January 12, 1939- September 9, 2025
Decatur - Peggy Arlene McLaughlin, of Anita, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, leaving behind a legacy of faith, resilience, and joy. She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Larry McLaughlin; her children, Mark McLaughlin (Jennifer) and their children Erin (Peter) and Sean; Brad McLaughlin (Buffy) and their children Collin and Ellary; and Diane Sweetwood (Dan) and their children Claire and Ben.
Family was Peggy’s greatest joy. Nothing made her happier than gathering with loved ones for holidays or summer visits, where her incredible love for each of them was felt deeply.
Her faith was central to her life. Peggy had a deep love for Jesus, and her favorite hymn, “Joy to the World,” reflected her hope and joy in meeting Him. She often said she wanted it sung at her funeral as a celebration of eternal life.
Peggy was a lifelong learner who delighted in encouraging others. She and Larry taught hundreds of people to water ski, and countless more to play bridge and other card games. She had a gift for lifting others up—always quick with a smile and a phrase like, “You’re doing great, try again!” Her belief in people made them believe in themselves.
For over three decades, Peggy faced cancer with extraordinary strength. She never complained about the countless treatments or the difficult news she endured, instead often saying, “I’m lucky to still be here.” In truth, we were the lucky ones—blessed beyond measure to have shared life with her.
Peggy’s love, encouragement, and unwavering spirit will live on in all who knew her.
