Richard Hammel's Obituary
Decatur-Richard 'Richie' Hammel, 71, of Decatur passed away 6:50 pm Thursday, May 27, 2010 in his home, surrounded by his family.
Services to celebrate Richie's life will be 11:00 am Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Kaley officiating. Services will conclude with interment in Macon County Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 ' 8 pm on Monday at the funeral home. Richie was born July 26, 1938 in Decatur the son of William C. and Pauline I. (Hinkle) Hammel. He attended Sunnyside Grade School, Latham Jr. High, and graduated from Warrensburg Latham High School; he also attended Millikin University. Richie married Betty Sue Koger January 4, 1958. She preceded him in death on September 13, 1999.
Richie worked for the Decatur Park District for 35 years, retiring in 1996. He was the golf pro at Scovill Golf Course from 1962 ' 1974 and Fairies Park Golf Course from 1975 ' 1996. He was a lifetime member of the PGA of America. Richie also attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
He enjoyed traveling with family, especially the winter vacations with Betty Sue and watching their children play golf. Also enjoyed playing golf with family and friends and traveling to the south for golf vacations with various groups! Enjoyed spending time with his children, grand children, and great-grand children. Enjoyed reading the bible and the scriptures each day. Also enjoyed studying the bible weekly with Jehovah Witnesses and good friends Max and Martha.
Survivors include sons Kevin, Scott and Steve of Decatur, and daughter Penny of Florida. Grandchildren Mary Hammel, Cara Hammel, Brandi Bridgeman, Allie Hammel, and Colten Hammel. Great grandchildren Amia Taylor, Brylon Williams, Cortez William Woodland, and Kaylee Marie Bridgeman. Brothers Joe (Teri) Hammel and Jim (Jann) Hammel and sisters Sue Koshinski and Becky (Paul) Mullen. Many wonderful nieces and nephew.
