My name is V.L. Hanes and I have lived in Dahlgren since I came into this world. I am 77 years old and knew Bob as far back as I can remember. I had two brothers. One was two years older than Bob and the other four years older. Bob would come to the house and along with many other boys play basketball for hours. He always told me that my brothers never gave him any favors because he was younger and not as big as them. Bob would say he felt like a punching bag, but he would just get up and keep playing and he felt that this really helped him as he got older and played high school basketball. I would play against Bob and since he was four years older than I was he gave me the same treatment and there was no question he made me a much better player. I watched Bob play every high school game in his career and tried to attain the talent he displayed. Dahlgren won the District Championship my senior year and Bob called me and told me how proud he was of the team. I really looked up to Bob and this small gesture meant the world to me. I feel like a wonderful part of my past is now missing and I will never forget Bob and his wonderful days as a Dahlgren Bulldog. God Bless !
Bob and I go back 60 years when we were with Federal Kemper. Bob was married and I was a single guy. When Sharon and I got married Carrie was our flower girl. We used to compete in our softball talents, in one game I cleared the left field,fence and rubbed it in until Bob hit one over the center field snack bar. My man!
he was my only first cousin and I miss him dearly. He’ll always be Bobby Lee to me.
