I remember a summer school class that he taught. One student fell asleep during class one day, and when it was time to dismiss, Mr. Romer put his finger up to his lips, making the 'shhh' motion to the class. He motioned for everyone to leave the classroom quietly, while he took the clock and moved it forward an hour! Would have loved to have be there, when that student woke up!

Bob was a customer at my previous place of employment. He always made his presence known and made everyone smile. I didn't know him well but I'll never forget him.

Mr. Romer was my World History teacher at Stephen Decatur – he made the subject of History so much more interesting.. I will never forget the Mickey Mouse quizzes or the Donald Duck tests. I began teaching for Decatur Public Schools in 1973, but didn't meet Mr. Romer until well after his retirement when I had "Rojo" and Julie's sons, Alex and Sam, at Dennis Elementary School. His great sense of humor, love for education and sports,and pride in his community and family were always present. To put it simply in a quote that Julie once gave me: "The best portion of a good man's life . . . his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love." Bob had hundreds of these acts. He was a rich man and it is reflected in his family and ALL the lives he touched! I had Bob Romer for History and Driver's Ed. He was my favorite teacher of all of SDHS. Bob believed in me and guided me when I needed it most. I was having many problems when I met him and with his style and personality I found the right path and began asking myself, "What would Mr. Romer think?" My name is Leonard and he called me Leonardo. He gave me the only detention I ever had in school. I accepted it because he didn't give it to be mean or with judgement. As a lifelong Decatur resident, I graduated from Stephen Decatur High School class of '67. I taught in District 61 off and on from 1971 – 2012. My husband teaches and coaches high school in Macon County as well. I am not exactly sure when I came to know Mr. Romer, but I am sure our paths crossed numerous times. What I do know is that he was highly regarded in the Decatur education community, as well as the Decatur business community. My sincere condolences to the Romer family on the death of your loved one. Mr. Romer was one of my favorite teachers EVER. He made Social Studies at Stephen Decatur come alive. He always had a smile and a sparkle in his eyes. He made learning fun and I will always fondly remember his Mickey Mouse quizzes. He had a zest for life that was inspiring and I will never forget him. Dar,My deepest sympathy to you. Your husband was so kind to me when I was taking the Constitution test for School Nurse Certification. I called him because I couldn't finish in time when the building closed where the test was given. I was waiting until Harris School let out; so he suggested I ask if I could leave school early to allow more time.
