Robert Herman Champion Sr.'s Obituary
Robert Herman Champion Sr., 90, of Argenta, Illinois, passed away May 13, 2025, in his home, surrounded by family.
Robert was born in Eufaula, Alabama, on October 13, 1934, the son of Henry Herman Joseph Delmar Champion and Lennie (Buttrum) Champion. He married Patsy “Pat” Wright on March 8, 1961, in Columbus, Georgia. Robert served honorably in the United States Navy for 21 years. After his service, he worked as a supply officer for Kowa Graphics Printing. He was a proud member and union steward negotiator for the CWA (Communications Workers of America). He shared his faith with others by serving as a Chaplain Assistant while in the Navy and as a Sunday School teacher after he returned home. He was a Board Trustee for the St. Regis Homeowners’ Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed photography and was passionate about cars and guns. He was a natural leader who commanded respect from all who knew him. His bravery was recognized by his participation in a Land of Lincoln Honor Flight. His children and grandchildren will long remember the blessing of being with him in his final days.
Robert is survived by his children Mary (Randy) Brown of Weiser, ID, Robert H. (Marjory) Champion Jr. of Argenta, IL, Timothy (Diana) Champion of Decatur, and Tracie (David) Frazee of Decatur; 15 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pat, one sister, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
