Robert G. Harmon's Obituary
Decatur-Robert G. Harmon, 95, of Decatur, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Robert was born December 27, 1921 in Lincoln, Illinois, the son of Ewing and Ruby Harmon. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman based in New London, Connecticut Submarine Base Dispensary. Robert then was detached to the 4th Marine Division on Maui, Hawaii. He participated in the battles of Saipan and Tinian, Mariannas Islands, and Iwo Jima Volcano Islands. After he was discharged from the military he attended Southern Illinois University pre-med for three years and graduated from Gradwohl Medical Laboratory College of St. Louis in 1950. Robert joined Taylor Pharmaceutical Company as a microbiologist in 1952 and retired in 1984 after thirty-two years of service. He was a member of Central Christian Church since 1950 and had faithfully served on the board of deacons and as an usher.
He was also a member of the American Medical Technologists Association, Parenteral Drug Association, and the Sun-N-Fun Club. Robert was a current member of the Golden K Service Club, American Legion Post 105, 4th Marine Division Association, and Golden K Golf League. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed all major sports and playing bridge. Robert married Billie Schwegman of Herrin, Illinois in 1950. They shared over sixty-six years together.
Robert leaves behind his wife Billie, sons Steve of Decatur and Jim of Vienna, grandchildren Michael (Kenna) of Decatur, Amy (Nick) of Bloomington, great-granddaughter Maci of Decatur, nephews Tim Harmon of Lincoln, Kevin Harmon of New York, and Mark Harmon of Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and sister.

Services to celebrate Robert’s life will be 12:00 PM Friday, January 20, 2016 in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11-12 prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Central Christian Church.
