Robert Lee Whiteman's Obituary
Robert (Bob) Lee Whiteman, 93, died Sunday at 10:07 a.m., September 24, 2017 at Decatur Memorial Hospital with family by his side. Bob was born on June 20, 1924 in Hillsboro, IL. He married Effie Mae Bradley 70 years ago on December 25, 1946 shortly after meeting her at the Blue Mill Restaurant where she waitressed.
Bob is the son of Clyde Lee Whiteman and Thelma Vaughn Berry. He grew up on a farm and worked from a young age delivering newspapers for the Morning Herald and for Meadow Gold Dairy delivering milk to local residents. He went to Decatur High School and completed his degree in the Army Aircorp where he enlisted January 26, 1943. He fought in World War II as a Quarter Master and served in the European Theatre returning home in November of 1945.
He worked for George Walker Plumbing and Heating for 30 years and was a square dance caller for 25. He was a member of First Christian Church for 88 years and served as an Elder, Board Member, Chairman of the Board and various other departments and committees. He also played baseball for the church team in his early years. Bob enjoyed woodworking, camping, and traveling across the country visiting family and friends as well as traveling to various placed overseas. Bob was a faithful servant. His faith and family and friends were very important to him and his lovely wife.
He is survived by, 2 half-brothers, children; Brenda (Terry) Jennings of Colorado, Donald (Debbie) Whiteman of Decatur, 7 grandchildren: Tina (Doug) Gist, Tammy (Brian) Dawson, Teresa Shepherd, Jeffrey (Corey) Whiteman David Whiteman, Jon (Janet) Whiteman, Mike (Barbara) Whiteman, and 9 great grandchildren 8 great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and 1 brother and a grandson.
Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday September 27, with Funeral services at 12 Noon at the First Christian Church with Internment and military rites following at Fairlawn Cemetery.
