Roger Willis' Obituary
Roger Willis, 75, of Decatur, affectionately known as “Papa Sonny,” passed away on April 10, 2014, in his home. Roger was born on August 9, 1938, in Decatur to John and Ethel Willis.
A service in celebration of Roger’s life will be held on April 14, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at West Side Church of the Nazarene, 1224 W. Grand, Decatur, IL, with Reverend Steve Cecil officiating. Casual dress is welcomed by the family. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will follow at Graceland Cemetery.
Roger served his country as a member of the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany and Fort Carson, CO. After his military service, Roger worked at Tastee Bakery as a mechanic. He later worked as a mechanic for ADM Trucking, retiring in 2000. Roger spent his retirement years caring for and doting upon his beloved grandchildren. He enjoyed watching the History Channel, tinkering with cars, and ribbing his family about the Chicago Cubs.
Roger is survived by his children: Nancy Hall, David VanFossan, Judy (Joseph) Marrin, Debra (William) Trotter, Cindy (Woodrow) David, Kim (Thomas) Riley, Mindy (Mark) Collins, and Rodney VanFossan; twenty-five grandchildren, including daughter-by-heart Danielle Fields, whom he raised from infancy; thirty-three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He also leaves behind his partner in life, Barbara Larson, who provided much of his care in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Autism Speaks, to provide support for an issue close to Roger’s heart.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Julie Beck; and one daughter, Wendy Willis.
