I had the great pleasure and honor to have served with Commander Wight during his entire tenure as Captain of the USS Aspro SSN 648. He was loved and respected by all shipmates. As an enlisted sailor, I will tell one story of Captain Wight that says it all about his love for his crew. When he was transferred off the Aspro to go on to more responsibility, the crew gave him a party in his honor. Later that same day, he was to be honored by a second party given in his honor by the Submarine officers at Pearl Harbor Naval Base. But Commander Wight refused to leave the enlisted crew party, staying until late in the evening, and never made it to the officer’s party given in his honor - that is how much he loved and respected his crew! He was a great Man!

My sincere condolences to the entire family and all of Cdr Wights' friends.Here was one great gentleman, XO and friend. Although I only made two patrols with him before he was transfered to the Aspro command I can say he was a great XO.I am indeed sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to Patricia and her family. Roy was the "other" executive officer on the commissioning crew of the Lewis and Clark. He was, however, a real example to the junior officers on both crews. A well respected man! I hold his example high for my development in the NavyFrank Jordan

Roy was a great XO on the USS Lewis and Clark SSBN 644 Gold in the middle 60's. He was greatly admired by everyone who served under him. A fine man, inspirational leader, and hard worker that always acted with a high level of integrity. My only wish would have been to serve with him again in later years. Roy, you were inspirational to me on USS Lewis and Clark as Executive Officer of the Gold Crew — truly the glue that held the ship together.I'm only sorry that we didn't see one another after we were both out of the Navy, although we talked by telephone. I still remember the "bent periscope," Roy, and have the pictures of it that you sent me for the L&C reunion!God bless you and keep you, as well as Pat and your entire family.Very respectfully,Roger Mehle

I worked with Roy Wight when he was managing the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety. I believe he was loved and respected by each and every person fortunate enough to cross paths with him. He was the personification of a supervisor and friend who treated his fellowmen in the manner which he himself would like to be treated. The Lord has accepted Roy with open arms.
