Shirley Oseland's Obituary
Shirley Jean (Stymets) Oseland, 81, of Decatur, IL passed peacefully at 7:02 a.m. on July 31, 2016, in Fair Havens Christian Home. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Larry A. Oseland, whom she married on August 11, 1979, in Decatur.
Shirley was born on June 20, 1935, in Lane, Illinois, the daughter of Howard and Julia (Lyons) Stymets.
Shirley was a graduate of Millikin University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Art. Shirley spent most of her career teaching art in the Decatur school district and later as curator of the Macon County Museum. Shirley loved feeding and talking to her backyard critters and her yearly visits from her wrens, especially when she was able to join them in song.
In their younger years, Shirley and Larry enjoyed traveling the world, including their trips to Egypt, Alaska, Hawaii, and Midway Island. They also enjoyed volunteering at Rock Springs Conservation Area and Nature Center and playing in the Center’s dulcimer group.
Besides her husband, Shirley is survived by her stepchildren, Gregory (Pamela) Oseland, Peru, IL, Brian (Angela) Oseland, Sumter, SC, Tom (Linda) Oseland, Riverton, IL, Margaret (Rick) Schloemer, Cartersville, GA, and her special cousin, Reta Pirtle, Antioch, CA; step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Oseland, Jessica (Ben) Wolf, Hannah and Brianna Oseland, Richard and Jake Jerome, Megan (Mike) Muchow, and step-nephew, Mike (Holly) Brady. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, and sister-in-law, Donna (Jim) Brady.
Services to celebrate Shirley’s life will begin with a visitation in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home on Thursday, August 4 at 2:00 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. with Gerald Marietta speaking. Entombment will be in the Mary Queen of Angels Mausoleum in Graceland Cemetery immediately following the service. Memorials are suggested to Rock Springs Conservation Area and Nature Center.
