Shirley Darlene Workman's Obituary
Shirley Darlene (Arndt) Workman passed away peacefully at 6:35am on Monday, January 30th at her residence in Decatur, Illinois.
Funeral services to celebrate Shirley's life will be 10 am Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Graceland Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at the funeral. Burial with 'Flight Home' Ceremony will be in Graceland Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Shirley was born on October 13, 1935 in Decatur, Illinois. The daughter of Darrell and Garnet Arndt, and devoted sister to David Arndt of Beaver, Ohio, she married Marvin Larry Workman on February 27, 1954 in Taylorville, Illinois, upon graduating from Stephen Decatur High School. During her career, she worked at the Sears Credit Union, Activity Director at Americana, and Activity Director at St Mary's Hospital. She initiated the first adult day care at Mt Zion Presbyterian Church. She and husband Larry were one of the first in Macon County to champion for grandparents rights. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed square dancing, loved to play board games with her grandchildren, horse racing, and going to the casinos. She loved to travel, and planned many adventures to Lake of the Ozarks, California, a cruise in the Bahamas, and a 25th anniversary trip to Hawaii. She supported her children and grand-children in their sporting endeavors and attended many. She also enjoyed the theatre, and passed this love onto her children. She devoted many hours to Theatre 7, and at one time even had everyone in the family involved in the production of 'The King and I', either onstage or working as stage crew. She attended GT Church in Decatur. She loved the Lord and is now square dancing or playing cards peacefully with Him.
She is survived by her devoted husband Larry, sons Marvin Rick and Pam of Decatur, Randy R and wife Krystal of Escondido, CA, and daughter Robbin Lynn and husband Scott McFadden. Grandchildren are Elizabeth (husband Luke) Hendricks of Olathe, Kansas, Melissa and Jason Broce of Decatur, Matthew McFadden and fiancée Hannah Boyd of Decatur, Jessica Workman of Decatur, and Courtney Willis of Wilmington, North Carolina, and 5 great grandchildren & 5 step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother.
