Susan Elaine Tinder's Obituary
Susan Elaine Tinder, age 79 of Charleston, IL passed away at 9:30 AM, Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Hilltop Nursing Home.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2206 4th St., Charleston, IL from 3 to 5 PM with a memorial service following. Pastor Janice Kahl will officiate. Private inurnment will occur later.
Susan was born August 26, 1940 in Galva, IL to Melvin and Elizabeth (Swanson) Rodgers. She was raised by Mr. Rodgers and her stepmother, Lorene Rodgers. She married Albert Richard Tinder on December 2, 1960 in Mattoon, IL. She is survived by one son, Mark Tinder, (Cassandra) of Lerna, IL and two daughters, Susy Horn (Steve, previously deceased) of Fort Myers Beach, FL and Rebecca Burger (Robert) of Philipsburg, PA; eight grandchildren, Eric Miller of Charleston, IL, Jessica Matthews of Ft. Myers, FL, Spencer Tinder of Sullivan, IL, Blake Tinder of Phoenix, AZ, Chris Storm of Mattoon, IL, Nick Storm of Mattoon, IL, Robert Burger, Jr., of Philipsburg, PA and Rachel Burger of Philipsburg, PA, and numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Anne Rodgers of Charleston, IL and Mary Beth Sternberg of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother, Richard Rodgers (wife Jean Churchill).
Susan was retired from Moore Business Forms, Charleston, IL after thirty years of service, followed by employment in the State’s Attorney’s office, Toledo, IL, the Circuit Clerk’s office, Toledo, IL and Eastern Illinois University Food Service, Charleston, IL.
Susan was a long-time member of the Methodist Church in Mattoon, Greenup and Charleston, IL. She was an outstanding gardener and seamstress. She also enjoyed cooking and reading, but her real passion was her family. The highlight of her year was the family gathering each summer to share stories, eat lots of good food, and catch up with each other’s lives.
