Sylvan E. Utsler's Obituary
Decatur-Sylvan Earl Utsler, 100, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Heartland Health Care of Decatur.
Sylvan was born June 16, 1915 in Douglas County, Illinois, the son of Shelby and Arvilla (Sparks) Utsler. He graduated from Atwood High School class of 1933 and Upholstering Trade School. He worked at Spencer Kellog, the City of Decatur, and was a self-employed plasterer and upholsterer. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for over fifty-five years. Sylvan and his wife delivered meals on wheels and he volunteered at recycling can for many years. He married Mildred Lucille Bennett on February 12, 1940 in Dexter, Missouri. She preceded him in death February 3, 2003.
He leaves behind his daughter Lucy McGinnis of Champaign and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, wife, son Aaron Thomas Utsler, three sisters, and three brothers.
Services to celebrate Sylvan’s life will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2015 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Tabernacle Baptist Church 650 N Wyckles Rd, Decatur, IL 62522.
