Thelma Carter's Obituary
Decatur – Thelma Audrine Carter, 96, of Clinton formerly of Decatur passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 in Manor Court Nursing Home in Clinton.
Thelma, daughter of John Patterson and Myrtle Ellis Patterson, was born on July 17, 1917 in Decatur where she lived most of her life. In 1935 she met and married Claro E. “Sonny” Carter, her husband of 59 years. Their son Claro E. “Bucky” Jr., came along in February 1938, and was born in the family home in Decatur.
A talented craftswoman with many hobbies and pastimes, Thelma was especially noted for the beautiful afghans and sweaters she crocheted for family members. She also crocheted hundreds of newborn baby caps which she donated to local hospitals.
Thelma was a lifetime member and Past President of Decatur Women’s Club.
Thelma is survived by her son, Claro E. “Buck” Carter Jr., daughter-in-law, Eileen Torrillo Carter, two granddaughters, Suni Gale Kukuk (Gary) of Victoria, IL; Suzanne Lynette Moore (Danny) of Clinton, IL; step-granddaughters, Stacey Lyn Moore (David) of Naperville, IL; Megan Adair Myers (Kevin) of Clinton, IL. Thelma also has 10 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband, Claro E. Carter Sr., two brothers, Clinton Patterson and Lloyd Robinson; grandson, James Eugene Carter; and daughter-in-law, Faye Elaine Carter.
Graveside service to celebrate Thelma’s life will be 1:30 PM Thursday, March 20, 2014 in Fairlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:30 -1:30 in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
