Thomas A Whalen's Obituary
Thomas Allen Whalen, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Decatur, Illinois, on May 1, 2025.
Born on May 11, 1934, in Decatur, Tom was a lifelong resident of the city. He dedicated many years of service to the City of Decatur through his career and was recognized for his strong work ethic and commitment to his community.
Tom served his country honorably as a medic in the United States Army. His military service reflected a deep sense of duty and compassion that remained with him throughout his life.
An avid sports enthusiast, Tom loved to bowl in his local league and never missed the "big game" be it baseball, football, or basketball. He always supported his Fighting Illini, Chicago Bears and St. Louis Cardinals. In addition to sports, he had a passion for reading. He enjoyed books of all genres and kept up with current events through weekly magazines and the Herald & Review newspaper.
Tom shared many cherished years with his life partner, Linda Boyer. Their relationship was marked by mutual support and affection. In her later years, Tom became her devoted caregiver until her passing.
He is survived by his sons Mark Whalen, Kenneth Whalen, and Timothy Whalen; his bonus son Ronald Boyer; his brother, Gerald Whalen; his sister, Rose Nichols; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Grace Whalen; his beloved life partner, Linda Boyer; brothers David, William, and Jack Whalen; and sister Patricia Richardson.
A graveside service will be held on May 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Graceland-Fairlawn Cemetery, 2091 North Oakland Avenue, Decatur, IL. Those attending are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:45 AM to go in procession to the gravesite.
