Vermella P. Moss' Obituary
Vermella Pauline Moss, one of Decatur’s oldest and most supported residents, departed this earth on February 7, 2015, at the ripe age of 95 years old. Vermella, better known to the Decatur community as “Mother Moss” was born to David James and Josephine Thomas on November 11, 1919. Mother Moss lived a long and prosperous life for nearly a century and was a wealth of information. She was considered a walking history book. Mother Moss endured, witnessed, and survived many events; Prohibition, women’s Voting Rights, The attack on Pearl Harbor, the outbreak of World War II, The Korean War, The First Television, The Civil Right Era, The rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, The assassination of the President John F. Kennedy, The Vietnam War, The first Heart Transplant, Man Landing and Walking on the Moon, The arrest and release of Nelson Mandella, The first and second Gulf War, The cloning of Dolly the Sheep, World Globalization, the New Millennium , September 11th Terrorists Attack, Hurricane Katrina, The capture of Sadam Hussein, The first African American President, The capture of Osama Bin Ladin, and the bombing of the World Trade Center.
Mother Moss has four sisters and brothers that have passed on; David James Thomas Jr. Albert Thomas, Matilda Thomas and Willie Ann Smith. Mother Moss had six children, two, Mona and Arnold Thomas who have passed on. Her surviving children are Barbara Ethel Small, Laverne Troupe, Nadine Little-Moore, and Kenneth Hordge. Mother Moss is the strong root of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, she is with us in spirit. Mother Moss has adopted countless numbers of family and friends along the way. She will be missed and never forgotten by all who knew and loved her.
Services to celebrate Vermella’s life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Love Fellowship Christian Church,1567 North Clinton Street, in Decatur. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
