William D. Potrafka's Obituary
William D. Potrafka, of Boody, IL, peacefully left for Heaven on August 25, 2016. He celebrated his 92nd birthday on August 20th with many cherished family and friends sending sweet thoughts and warm memories.
The adventure of Bill’s life began in 1924, the youngest son of Henry (Hank) and Frieda (Greene) Potrafka of Oreana, IL. Bill, along with brothers Jack and Bob, never missed an opportunity for mischief growing up on the family farm and surrounding area. It is a miracle he survived! Bill started his business career at AE Staley in 1942. In 1943 he joined the US Navy where he served as a coxswain in San Diego and Saipan until 1946. Upon returning home he joined the Naval Reserve. He also resumed working for AE Staley and attended Browns Business College.
The adventures continued for Bill on Sept. 21, 1947 when he married the love of his life Betty Jean May, and together they made two beautiful children, Karla and Greg. In 1948 Bill joined his father-in-law, Carl May, and became an owner of Carls Auto Sales in Boody, continuing the family business. Bill pursued civic opportunities to aid his community as an Auditor and Supervisor for Blue Mound Township; he was the last Justice of the Peace in Blue Mound Township; and a former Cub Scout Master. He was a past 32nd Master Mason with the Masonic Lodge Scottish Rite until he joined Pilgrim Lutheran Church when he severed his Masonic connection. For several years Bill served the Lord as an usher at Pilgrim Lutheran Church where he offered all “a pew with a view” and always had a witty comment for the pastor’s wife. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 105 Decatur. And for a time, he enjoyed membership with the Commodore Decatur Yacht Club where he attempted to teach his family to sail. Not successfully, but they never sank. Throughout their 69 years of adventures, Bill and Betty travelled the United States, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. They especially enjoyed a trip around the Baja. “Well done – enter thou into the day of the Lord.” Matt. 25:21
A loving and devoted family man, he will be greatly missed. Bill is survived by his loving wife Betty; daughter Karla (Doug) Miller of TN; son Greg (Marcia) Potrafka of Boody; and special niece Faith (Peter) Sherry and daughters of VA. Also surviving are grandchildren, Erik (Lorena); Jared; and Emily Potrafka; great-granddaughters Audra and Victoria; and nephew Wayne (Teresa) Potrafka of Oreana. He was preceded in death by his parents Hank and Frieda; in-laws Carl and Frieda May; his brothers; and most recently, son-in-law Doug Miller.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Christian Sharing Fund at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Decatur, IL.
Betty and the family are so very grateful for the prayers and support from family, friends, Pilgrim family, and St. Johns Hospice. God Bless you all!
