Wilma Jean Verrill's Obituary
Wilma Jean (Poe) Verrill, 94 of Decatur, IL went home to be with Our Lord on January 21, 2024.
Wilma was born October 7, 1929, to Roy and Bertha (Brummet) Poe in Decatur, IL. She grew up as an outgoing tomboy who loved to spend time with her brothers and sister, aunts and uncles, and many cousins.
Wilma met Sam Verrill while skating. Sam's sister Virginia (Verrill) Bishop remarked that she had never seen two people more in love. They married on October 22nd, 1954, in Decatur, IL. They had 6 children, Carolyn (Gary) Thompson of FL, Joyce May Verrill (deceased), Lois Rauch of IL, Lyle (Janis) of MI, Joe of IL, and Peggy (Kevin) Wisher of IL.
Wilma and Sam were married for 53 years and loved their children and grandchildren dearly.
They worked hard together to provide for and protect their children. Wilma was always easy going and made friends effortlessly. She worked at Mueller Co. before her marriage. While her kids were small, she volunteered for the local park concession stand in the summers and in the PTA in the fall and winter. She volunteered as a room mother and in other areas of Roach Elementary School. Wilma served as Den Mother for her son's Boy Scout troop.
Later in her life, Wilma lived at Randall Residence for several years. She enjoyed the people and friends she made there and participated in many events, games, and other activities.
Wilma was a lifelong patriot. She loved music, playing cards, reading, watching the St. Louis Cardinals, and most of all her family and friends.
Wilma is survived by her children Carolyn, Lois, Lyle, Joe, and Peggy, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and brother Larry Poe.
She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed enough to have known her. Rest in peace our precious Mother and Grandmother, till we meet again.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Sam, beloved daughter Joyce, grandson Jacob Thompson, brothers Richard Poe and Rex Poe, and sister Vera Eschbaugh.
A memorial service will be held at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home in Decatur, IL at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 8th, 2024, with interment immediately following at Graceland cemetery.
