Decatur – Helen Henrietta Heinkel, 101, of Decatur, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on her birthday Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Moweaqua Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center with her favorite nurse Vicky at her side.
Helen was born on January 30, 1917, in Decatur, Illinois, the daughter of William and Henrietta Nickel. She married Frederick Heinkel Sr. on June 5th, 1938. They spent 61 wonderful years together and were blessed with one son, Frederick “The Great” Heinkel, Jr. Helen was a graduate of Brown’ s Business College and LPN school. Helen was a nurse for many years on the pediatric and medical units at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, IL.
After retirement, Helen loved spending time with her husband, son, daughter- in- law and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and exploring new cities, adventures and restaurants. She was an excellent seamstress and cook. She was famous for her homemade pies and her spaghetti and meatballs. She enjoyed special Sunday dinners with family and watching WWF wrestling and the Carol Burnett show with her granddaughters. She was an active member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and loyal customer of Heinkel’s Meat Packing Company.
Helen leaves behind her beloved daughter- in- law Suzanne Heinkel of Decatur, IL, her granddaughters Katharine Heinkel of Cary, NC, Karen (Peter) Schussler of Peoria, IL, loving great-grandchildren Noah and Savannah Vivian of Cary, NC and Rachel and Claire Schussler of Peoria, IL. She also leaves behind her long time loving care taker Doris Tibbs.
She was reunited in Heaven with her father and mother William and Henrietta Nickel, her husband Frederick William Heinkel Sr., her son Frederick William Heinkel Jr., her brother William Nickel, and her great-grandson Nicholas Wheeler Vivian.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Imboden Creek Gardens and Moweaqua Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for all of their loving care and the staff at the Hilton Homewood Suites in Forsyth for making our travels home comfortable.
Helen lived a life of service to her family and her community. She always had a smile that would light up the room and she gave immense joy to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren every day. She will never be forgotten.
Services to celebrate Helen’s life will be 11:00 AM Monday, February 5, 2018 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2155 N. Oakland Ave., Decatur, with Pastors Bill and Brock Abbott officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.
