David Russell Eck's Obituary
David Russell Eck, born to Russell Albert Eck and Alice Jeanette Eck (nee Hill) on January 15, 1947, in the Gresham neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, attended Calumet High School (Class of 1965) until he volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He graduated from MCRD in San Diego in 1965 and deployed to Vietnam, where he served with his fellow Marines on Hill 724 manning HAWK missile batteries twenty miles north of Da Nang. After earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet Nam Service Medal, the Viet Nam Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and the Marksman Shooting Badge, he was discharged honorably in 1968. He was known to many friends and customers as “Cable Dave” during his years as an independent contractor. He was an avid and skilled fisherman who enjoyed spending his retirement close to family and visited his friends as often as he could. He passed peacefully from this life to the care of Our Lord on June 30, 2024, at home in Warrensburg, Illinois, attended by his children, Brenda Eck and Brian (Samantha) Eck, and Luna, the best dog in the world. He is survived by his sons, Ricky and Roger Auclair; his sister, Karin (Rick) Dusek; his brother, Chuck (Sharon) Eck; grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Nick, Kaleb, Hailey, Anna, Haley (Hollyn), Hannah, Grace, Lucas, and Kathleen; and his many nieces and nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Kenneth and Timothy Eck. His last wishes were for a soldier’s burial. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Road, Elwood, IL 60421, at which time his family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend. In lieu of flowers, any gifts should be directed to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
