Uncle Don was loved and especially revered by our entire family. He made each of us feel that we were special to him, and I believe that is because we were! My first memory of him was when I was 2 or 3 years old. We were all at Nilwood, Illinois celebrating Christmas. He, along with my other Uncles, wrapped a gigantic box, and I was told that it was for me. I could hardly wait to open it. While others were opening their gifts, I kept imagining what could be inside that very large gift. Finally, it was my turn to open my gift. I anxiously pulled off the paper to find another wrapped gift inside, and when I opened that one, I found yet another wrapped box. Each box brought laughs and encouragement to keep opening from my entire family. After unwrapping at least ten boxes, the last tiny box contained a pretty set of hair barrettes. Uncle Don taught many life lessons, but that day he taught me that the journey was the fun, and never to judge anything by what is seen on the outside. I honor all the life lessons he taught me. I honor his devotion to his family, his country, and especially the example he and Aunt Mary set with regard to married life, an example that should be emulated. Aunt Mary, you have been a rock and are so precious to all of us. I am thankful for your loving care, especially as health has been in decline. You have both brought so much to our family, and I dearly love you, Steve, and Kelly. I wish I could be there to honor Uncle Donâ??s amazing life.
