I sure loved seeing Don come in to Cancer Care to see all of us Nurses. He loved us and we loved him. He will be so missed. I have to laugh he always tried to get me to go to the boat to gamble.

Please accept our deepest sympathy is the loss of a great man and father. I worked with Don for many years and served alongside him in the Army Guard as well. I respected Don in every way, a hard working and intelligent man with outstanding military presence that was admired by all. I am sure he will be greatly missed by those that had the privilege of knowing him.

I first met Don in 1968 when I began serving with the Army Guard and started full time employment at the Aviation Facility at Midway airport in Chicago. Don was always a very dynamic individual with a booming voice and contagious smile that made friends easily. He was an inspiring NCO that led by example, being kind and understanding but could also instill fear in the recruit that strayed from his directions. Don was "Airborne" and showed it in his crisply starched uniform and spit shined boots always having that military bearing that subordinates would aspire to. Over the years we became close friends with Don and his wife Shirley and although Don moved on to Decatur and I remained in Chicago, we continued to get together along with Charlie and Joanne Leyden. Both Joan and I were deeply saddened to hear of Don's passing and want to extend our deepest sympathies to the family in their loss.

I'm very sorry to hear of Don's passing . He was a great leader with all the courage and heart you could want in a fellow soldier. I remember first meeting Don in 1971 as I walked into the N.G. at MDW . He said welcome to the unit and might I have any unit patches from from Vietnam . He was collecting patches and had a wall of them. I remember giving him a 281st Rat Pack patch . I would now be invited to all the future dice games in the NG. To me Don was always the man to go to if anything had to be done and done right. It was a privilege and honor to have served with him. God Bless Art Patek
I met Don through my husband who was in the National Guard with him. I remember getting him some food at a funeral dinner when he had hip problems. He thanked me and after that he always asked about me and I sent him candy and treats to the Tuesday morning breakfast meetings. Larry and I went to a funeral visitation and Don didn't make it, so we went with Dennis and Debbie Ernst to Don's home and visited for a while. He was a very nice man and very cordial. He will be missed very much. Larry and I send our deepest and warmest thoughts to the family during this time of sorrow.
