I remember when I first started working as a school nurse in Nov.1988; a really busy hectic time in my life. Moving to a new house and my husband in the hospital was not a good time to start a new job. The Christmas dinner for the school nurses was held very soon after and Gloria was asked to give the blessing before we ate. She began her prayer in her deep voice, " Dear Lord, We are so rushed…" pausing for a long time before going on. It was so poignant and expressed exactly how I felt.Shirley Blickensderfer RN

Gloria attended nurses training with my mother Juanita Howland Turney. My mother went through training in the Cadet Corp Program and graduated in 1946. Your sweet mother reunited with my mother in Bible Study Fellowship in the late 90's. I too had the privilege of knowing your mother through BSF. She was the essence of grace and beauty, seasoned wonderfully with her deep Faith in the Lord. I am so glad to have known her. My prayers are with you. I thought of her again last week when I learned of Bob Romer's death – should have recognized that as a sign. So many wonderful people there – and sadly we lose them. Gloria was more of a mother to me than my own. She helped me through one of the toughest times in my life and for her Christian love and care, I will always be grateful. Gloria moved to Decatur over 50 years ago and raised a family of 3 long before single parenting became common. She was a devoted nurse, and used her skills long after retiring. I will never forget how she would come over to my folks house and change my Dad's bandages every day while he recovered from one of his falls.She passed on her passion for nursing to her Daughter, Karen and then to Karen,s daughter Lindsay.She was a constant companion to her sister, my mother, as they walked thru every valley and shadow together and shared every joy and triumph throughout those 50 years.She was a servant of the community with her volunteer work and a stalwart member of the Lutheran church.Every time I came to Decatur I looked forward to seeing her. We say farewell, but not good bye as her spirit lives on in each of us.Paul, Boston
