Joy Witt's Obituary
Chicago ' Joy Constance (Arthur) Witt, 76, of Chicago, formerly of Decatur passed away Friday, October 26, 2012, at her Chicago condo, with her family at her side.
A celebration of Joy's life will be held from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at Prairie Avenue Christian Church, Decatur, Illinois with a memorial service at 1pm. Interment will be held privately at Graceland Cemetery, Decatur, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Robert L. and Joy C. Witt Scholarship Fund or the American Cancer Society.
Joy was born September 16, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of John T. and Hazel M. (Pfeiffer) Arthur. She was in the first graduating class from Oak Lawn High School, Oak Lawn, IL in 1954. She obtained her college degree in education from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL. She married Robert 'Bob' Witt on October 3, 1959, in Decatur, Illinois. Her entire teaching career was spent in Decatur, as an elementary school teacher with an emphasis in reading recovery. She was loved and will be missed by all that knew her.
She was an active church member, enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling and volunteering around the world, reading, gardening, and was a patron of the arts. At age 73, Joy sold her house and car in Decatur to fulfill her dream of living downtown Chicago with beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John T. Arthur, Jr, Floyd B Arthur, Robert F. Arthur; and husband, Robert L. Witt.
Survived by her children, Marcia (Kevin) Brezina of Glendale, Arizona; Craig (Jerri) Witt of Boca Raton, Florida; and Karen (Brett) Gordon of Mokena, Illinois; grandchildren, Paul Angichiodo, L. Cpl. Andrew Angichiodo, Ryan Witt, Grant Witt, Brady Witt, Anna Witt, Dylan Gordon and Drew Gordon; and brother Kenneth S. Arthur of Crossville, TN.
