Carol, my heart just sank after talking to you last night. I could hardly speak to my brother as to what your call was about. You and Larry have been wonderful friends and neighbors. Many of my memories of Larry come from walking my dog, Rusti. I clocked many miles walking her in all kinds of weather. Larry often had a doggie treat for Rusti when we walked by. While making over her happiness over the treat, we would talk about events in our lives, weather, retirement, his dog, etc. Once he even drove Rusti and I home. There was a loose dog in the neighborhood and I didn't want to risk a confrontation. He was happy to take us home. My thoughts and prayers are with you today from Alabama. Its supposed to snow here this afternoon. Rusti would still want to go for that walk. I'm sure Larry has a treat for her.Lots of hugs,Diane

Carol,I miss Larry so much already. He had an infectious smile and was very cunning in his execution of his job. He was highly thought of here at Caterpillar, and I personally learned from him how to be accountable as an engineer. Larry also shared his life stories and history with me. He was a hard worker who loved life, and farming. I couldn't believe he still had a farm in Nebraska and worked full time at Cat. We went on several trips together while working at Caterpillar and he was always very helpful in teaching me the ropes. He also taught me the meaning of "beef", me being from the city, not knowing the quality of steak cuts. Carol, you and your family are in our thoughts and are here to help in any possible. We pray that God will give you the strength to endure during these trying times, and I know He will comfort and protect you in this time of need. Carol was sorry to hear of your loss. Not sure you would remember me, I retired in 1995 and was friends with Dick Oldham and Gary Schroll. Larry started in Decatur not long after me. I was the horse guy that lived in the country so Larry and I shared farmer roots and I liked to tease him about being a Wealthy land baron. The big guy was a true gentleman and I enjoyed him. Again my sympathy.

Dear Carol and family and loved ones, I was saddened to learn of your beloved Larry's passing at so young an age. Even so, as I read the article, it seemed like he, and you, did a lot of living during all those years. He was a man of many interests and skills, and a real pleasure to know him.I know he must leave a big hole in your heart by his crossing over to God's eternal world. I consider myself very fortunate to have sat next to Larry the last two years before he retired. It took several months for us to warm up to each other as I was a green engineer and he knew that he was going to retire. After a very specific event one day, I seem to have passed an unspoken "Larry" test. Each morning thereafter, I would find a manila folder from his files on my chair. It would contain research or project development notes from his past. Each day during lunch, I would be allowed to ask as many questions as I could fit into our 30 minute lunch break. At the end of the day, the file would disappear forever but the knowledge he shared with me on engineering practices and his opinions on life have shaped my work and world more than any other from my professional career. Larry was my " handyman". I could always call on him for help or advice. He kept my lawn picture perfect every summer for years and the snow off my driveway. He was a good person and will be missed.Your neighbor, Pauline
