Margaret Anne Pondelick's Obituary
Decatur-Margaret Anne Brady Pondelick, 83, of Decatur, Illinois passed away Thursday, December 25, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital from Pulmonary Fibrosis. Her husband of sixty-five years Leo Joseph and her daughter were by her side.
Anne was born December 21, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, the second child of Charles Angelo and Elizabeth (Bertrand) Brady. She attended Marywood School for Girls in Evanston, Illinois, and received her B.A. from Elmhurst College, with a major in German. She did advanced studies in the German language at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal and at the University of Vienna in Austria.
Anne taught German at MacArthur High School for over twenty years. During five summers she accompanied MacArthur German students to Vienna, where they also studied German.
During her teaching career, Anne served as a Board member and President of the Illinois Foreign Language Teachers Association. After her retirement in 1991, she served on the Board of the Lincoln Square Theatre, the Millikin Homestead, and the Historic Decatur Foundation. Anne was appointed by the Mayor of Decatur to serve on the Historical and Architectural Sites Commission, and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
For many years Anne volunteered as “Commodore” for the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, receiving the “Distinguished Volunteer” award in 1996.
Anne leaves behind her husband Leo, daughter Lisa Anne Pondelick Olson and husband Curtis of Webster, Minnesota, granddaughter Laura Elizabeth Olson, and younger brother John Patrick Brady of Chicago.
Services to celebrate Anne’s life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Rev. John Biedler and Rev. Miley Palmer officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Community Foundation of Decatur/Macon County for the Leo and Anne Pondelick Charitable Fund.
