Thank you!
Thanks for sharing, Rich. My parents thought the world of you.
I met Nadine in 1975 when I started at K's Merchandise Mart. She knew 35mm cameras forward and backwards. She was a classy lady and I very much enjoyed getting to know her. My sympathies to you all. Mary Barnes Kramer
Lit a candle in memory of Nadine Miller
I first met Nadine in 1976 when we both started working at K's Merchandise within a few months of one other. She was a great coworker for nearly eleven years and one of the best two salespersons I've ever known. She had forgotten more about 35mm and other cameras than most people ever knew, and she patiently taught me about cameras. She had a unique ability to teach and come up with other examples when I was thick-headed–which was often–until I got "it."Nadine had a loyal following of customers who always requested her when they came in to buy camera equipment. Occasionally, a male patron would come in claiming that he knew a lot about cameras and wanting to talk to "the most knowledgeable camera person." When I pointed to Nadine, he would ask if there was a man he could talk to. I always replied something to the effect, "I thought you wanted the most knowledgeable person; you need to talk to Nadine." Once I asked Nadine how she dealt with such oafs. She replied that she gradually introduced more and more technical terms until the customer finally admitted he didn't understand something. She would reply, "Sorry, I thought you would know about that." She subtly put him in his place without offending and converted him into a loyal customer. When K's opened new stores, Nadine was often the person sent to train new employees.Nadine was easy to work with, and I can't think of anyone while I was at K's who didn't respect her or couldn't get along with her. One always knew exactly what Nadine thought; she was a straight-shooter, but she never offended.Nadine was not only a great person to work with; she was a good friend, as well. When my and Jill's two children were born, she made them afghans. She made them candy at Christmas, and this continued after she and Otis retired to Florida. Our kids always waited in anticipation of Nadine's Christmas candy arriving in the mail. I'm pretty sure that Nadine made gifts for other K's workers with new children, as well as candy for other coworkers. She was a very giving person. Nadine was one of the nicest people I've ever known. She sent me a birthday card every year after she retired, and I reciprocated. Nadine made and sent afghans from Florida to each of our three grandchildren in St. Louis after they were born. When I was hospitalized in Springfield for several weeks while still at K's, Nadine drove over to see me and lifted my spirits at a difficult time. Nadine and Otis would come to see us, or we would go to see them, when they were up from Florida visiting Cheryll and Mike. We exchanged phone calls to and from Florida. I've lost a good friend.
