Richard W. Vissering's Obituary
Richard William Vissering, a devoted family man, respected professional, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, with family by his side at the Arc in Forsyth, Illinois. Born on October 30, 1937 in Streator, Illinois, Richard was the beloved son of Arthur and Bernadine (Shuck) Vissering, who predeceased him.
Richard's life was a testament to the values of faith, love, and dedication. He was a proud graduate of Lowpoint Washburn High School, where he excelled both academically, athletically, and socially. As part of his education, Richard was an active member of 4H and Future Farmers of America. His passion for agriculture led him to the University of Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1959. During his university years, he was a proud member of the U.S. Air Force ROTC and a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma social fraternity; both embodying a spirit of service that would characterize his life.
In 1970, Richard married Rose Bean, in Decatur, Illinois. Together, they nurtured a loving, blended family of six children, instilling in them the Christian principles of faith and family. Richard's quiet strength, commitment, and deep personal relationship with God were the cornerstones of his life, guiding him through a successful career and a fulfilling personal life.
Richard dedicated 43 years to the First National Bank of Decatur where he began as a Farm Manager and retired as the President of the Farm Management Department in 2002. His leadership and expertise earned him the role of President of the Illinois Society of Professional Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers in 1988, highlighting his influence in the field.
A devout Christian and committed community member, Richard served as Deacon at Mound Chapel Church of God and later as Treasurer of Moundford Free Methodist Church, both located in Decatur. His dedication extended to various organizations, including Kiwanis, Golden K, Breakfast Sertoma, Jaycees, and the Salvation Army, reflecting his unwavering commitment to service and community.
Richard's life was enriched by his love for fishing, whether at local lakes or during family vacations at Lake Puckaway, Wisconsin. He enjoyed bowling and was a proud supporter at his grandchildren's school theatre, social, and sports events. In retirement, Richard and Rose embraced the joy of travel, exploring destinations from England and Europe to China, and across the United States, creating cherished memories.
Richard is survived by his wife, Rose, and their loving children: son Richard Vissering and wife Carol; daughter Karen (Vissering) Coffman; son Randal Vissering and partner Kim; son Keith Vissering and partner Hanh; daughter Teri (Vissering) Deverell; and daughter Ashley (Vissering) Hamann and husband Justin. He leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Richard is also survived by his sister, Marlene Falk of Minonk, IL.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at the Arc in Forsyth, IL; Enhabit Hospice, and to all who offered their thoughts and prayers during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory can be made to The Salvation Army of Illinois.
Noted in his personal bible the words of John 3:16, Romans 3:23; 6:23; and 10:9-10. Richard's faith was extremely personal; a guiding light, offering comfort and hope throughout his life. His legacy of love, service, and faith will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held from 10:00am to 11:00am on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home in Decatur, IL. A Funeral service will begin at 11:00am on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Burial will take place at Boiling Springs Cemetery in Decatur, IL.
