Robert Michael Cairns Thompson's Obituary
Decatur-Robert Michael Cairns Thompson EMC USN RET, 81, of Decatur, passed away at 8:03 a.m. Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Heartland Health Care Center.
Services to celebrate his life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Park officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
Interment with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy and Macon County Honor Guard and 'Flight Home' Ceremony will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 99 or St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. Online condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
Robert was born December 11, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of James and Jane (Sweeney) Thompson. He retired from the U.S. Navy, having served both Atlantic and Pacific ports from 1947-1966, including the Vietnam Conflict. He then became a member of IBEW Local 146 and worked as a journeyman wireman until his retirement. Robert was very active in and served three terms as Commander of VFW Post 99 in Decatur. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Eagles. He was humorous and easily amused but yet had a serious side. Robert was very generous and caring with a great love for his country and family. He married Donna Jean Cole on February 22, 1951.
He leaves behind Donna his beloved wife of over sixty years, daughter, Robin Piper and husband Andrew of Dixon, grandson, Carrington Piper of Chicago, sisters, Margaret Leese of Dayton, Ohio and Christine Johnson of Urbana, brothers, Thomas L. Thompson of Decatur, and John P. Thompson and wife Sharon of Decatur, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, brother, James, sister, Agnes, and niece, Kathleen.
